View Full Version : The Best Movie of All Time Tournament - Nominations
Mattrick
03-27-2008, 11:48 AM
This idea is simple. We'll compile a list of movies from nominations as chosen by all of us. I put them in a groups and we have polls in groups, maybe five days or a week apart, in which we vote on which on we like the best. We'll probably start 128 as there are so many. That number will be chopped in half and the chopped in half again until one one remains. The polls will start off with Eight movies and the top four move on. When were down to 32 the polls will have Four movies with the top two continuing. Final 8 or 16 will be head to head battles.
In the end we'll have annointed the greatest movie of all time.
The rules are simple:
1. A movie can only be nominated once. We don't need 15 people saying Blade Runner lol
2. Nominate two movies per post, number them in sequence from the last post.
3. You have to wait until at least five other people have made nominations before you can nominate again.
4. Ties will result in a separate poll open for only one day.
When this is done there will be a Best Movie Character of All Time Tournament which is a favourite of mine. Pitting Ash, Jack Sparrow, Agent Smith, Khan and Indiana Jones in a battle for supremacy.
Nominations: (will be updated daily)

Yes Jean, all films can be nominated. They just may not go as far as some American movies, all depends on who votes and where they are placed but I plan on the groupings to be completely random.
36. Almost Famous

please continue from my numbers on left, next is 38. Wizard of Oz was nominated twice becaus they both posted at same time essentially. I can just copy/paste to the original post this way without adding/changing numbers.

By the way, did the NCAA tournament give you this idea?
lol, no. A final fantasy forum I frequent used to do things like this years back. Best Movie Character, Sexiest Actor/Actress and stuff like that. Also my favourite Canadian sports channel - The Score - has done something similar. They had Greatest Performance and Greatest highlight but it that perfectly followed the NCAA bracket format, 1 on 1 starting with 64. I think that would take too long, so the first few rounds are quicker with larger groups.
Jean, I thankya for trying to get the numbers correct but I guess I'm not going to worry about it from a copy/paste perspective. Only reason I even ask for it is so we don't have to manually count them so we know when we're up.
Only 48 more movies to go. Looks like the tournament will start Monday.

jemaher, you posted those two movies too soon I'll do you one good and add Sin City. Not infringing on movie taste but I don't think I can morally add Hitman to the list.
Whomever nominated Kill Bill I joined them together as it was meant to be one movie but the studios wanted more money so they split it up. If people could watch Gone With The Wind back in 1939 in theatres they can watch something fast paced like Kill Bill all at once. Part 2 is awesome.
Mattrick
03-30-2008, 01:37 PM
I know I won't get any other input and I've only put in 6 movies so if anyone is opposed to me nominated 4 here let met know.
Also, could someone double check the list in the OP to make sure there is no repeats and the numbers are right? Can't have an extra movie due to double numbers.
RUBE, I'm just going to put them all at random. Match them up like that. I would've done it by Genre but not enough of each. Don't worry, I'll have smaller ones for horror/comedy/action movies at some point. I'm sure this tournament will come down to hardcore dramas anyways.

All tournaments are divisable by 8. If I had 125 then we couldn't have even numbers anywhere. 4 groups of 4 brackets with 8 movies. Without pulling a NFL and having a bye week for some teams, all pro sports use this system. 16 in hockey/basketball, baseball has 8. It's the only number who's multiples and divisables can be halfed over and over again while keeping it even. So you simply double the number.
We'd have two final movies so if you go backwards. '1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128...the next number would be 256 which I think would make this way to massive.
feverish, yeah, no one named T2 :panic: :panic: :panic: :panic: :panic: :panic: :shoot: I could take a movie out and put in T2 but that would kill the democracy of it all. There are a few movies I don't think even belong in the same sentence with 'best movie of all time' but oh well :(

Sorry everyone, tried to get new brackets up the other night but I couldn't access this movie forum for some reason and didn't even look at my computer yesterday. I'll be on later tonight with the tie breakers and new brackets will be up tomorrow.
....I forgot the face of my father lol :nope:

Tie breakers are up. If a mod could unstickey those threads (non-tiebreaker) already up I'll post the new ones tonight at some point.

04-08-2008, 06:18 PM
Are you gonna post the bracket that advanced?
Brice
04-08-2008, 06:53 PM
So, is that all of the current brackets you want unstickied? I will probably just move them to the clearing if we're done with them.
Mattrick
04-09-2008, 12:55 AM
Yeah, just leave the tie breakers until I'm done with them. I'll post the new brackets when there is some space freed.
Hello? Mattrick? Are you out there?

matt,
how many movies are left in the poll? I know we started with 128 but have we completed the first round?
Heather19
04-21-2008, 10:35 AM
I don't think so, I know there's still movies that were nominated that haven't made it into a poll yet.
jemaher
04-21-2008, 01:18 PM
ok, cool... I derive a perverse pleasure from the whole poll thing... and it is interesting to see the other opinions on the movie selections.
Because he has already released 12 groups with eight movies each that means that there are four groups left to be revealed in the first round.
The top finisher in each bracket so far (of course, there are three more movies from each):
A1: Silence of the Lambs
A2: Aliens (One of my nominations)
C1: Pulp Fiction
C2: Raiders of the Lost Ark
B3: Kill Bill, Wizard of Oz, Braveheart (all three tied for first)
B4: Vertigo
D3: Fight Club
D4: Forrest Gump
A3*: Almost Famous
A4*: The Lord of the Ring: Fellowship of the Ring (another of mine)
C3*: Goodfellas
C4*: Shawshank Redemption
*These are not officially closed yet but are close to it.
That leaves B1, B2, D1 and D2 to be voted on.
I wonder if Mattrick is going to keep the letters together or the numbers. (For example, is it going to be Silence of the Lambs versus Aliens or is it going to be Silence of the Lambs versus Pulp Fiction?)
Also, I hate to brag but 8 of my 9 nominations that have appeared so far have advanced or are really close in a group that is still open for voting (Stand By Me). Now I just need Groundhog Day to make it 9 of 10. (The loser was Million Dollar Baby.)

04-25-2008, 01:26 AM
I was thinking about Seeding them but the ties make that more difficult to do.
I've been contemplating how to do the next round as this round is sort of a round robin. I've still got a week to think about it.
I Think current polls are closed so I should be putting up the final four brackets for this round and then we're down to 64 movies.

Sorry everyone. I'm experiencing a bit of a healthy issue right now. Benign Paroxymal Positional Vertigo...it's caused by a build up of calcium stones in the inner ear. Essentially, when they move it sends false signals to the brain we causes vertigo and short bursts. Well, I've felt pretty out of it and almost constantly nauseaus for days.
Hopefully I can have this cleared up in a few days. If anyone would like to put it all together for me, I'll PM the brackets to them...I'm too out of it to want to do it all right now.

Oops I totally missed that the tournament has started already. My bad.
Hello? Mattrick? Are you out there?
The last set of polls have been closed a few days.
HHMMMM, seems Mattrick has forgot about us again. I hope he isn't ill again.
Based on the way the first four polls of the second round have gone I already know what most of the pairings will be for the seocnd round (except where there were ties) so I already know who I am picking in most cases. That makes me even more antsy to see what everyone else will pick, say for example when Unforgiven meets Die Hard or when The Empire Strikes Back meets The Green Mile.

I'm sorry everyone, a situation arose with my girlfriend and long story short, she just moved in with my so I've been a little caught up all weekend, this is the first time I've even looked at my computer. I'll be on at sometime tomorrow and should get on often enough the rest of the time. It's 4 am and I'm tired now.

A question, what happened to Vertigo? I remember it won a bracket but then I can't find it anymore.
It'll get there. All of it is broken up into 4 groups, A, B...C, D. Each has four brackets. I'm doing brackets I and II from each group from D to C then doing brackets III to IV A - D
In case anyone is wondering, I tabulated the votes and the movies remaining for Round Two were seeded in their brackets by votes. 1st seed vs 4th seed. Some seeds were tied with the same amount and I'm using personal discretion on this matchups. Trying to make it more challenging.
I'm surprised Princess Bride is only 50% from Godfather Part II...I guess I underestimated whatever attraction exists in a fantasy film.
Mattrick, have you given up on this or what?

You do all realize that nominating for this ended months ago and the first round of the tournament is done. If fact, several of the second round pairings are done as well. But, alas, for some reason Mattrick has abandoned us. Maybe I should take the second round pairings as I figure them and continue it...
